So clearly McDonald's has different menu items in different countries to appeal to different people. We don't frequent McDonald's, but the advertising is everywhere. This is their newest menu item, released in conjunction with their sponsorship of the World Baseball Classic:

I remember McDonald's having hot dogs in Chicago-area stores for a short while back in the '90s. Might have just been a regional thing, though. Obviously, they weren't successful in the US, since they're nowhere to be found now. Maybe the dogs will fare better in Japan.
